Innovation #2

The Largest-Selling Planter Box in the U.S.

The customer reviews on the left are from the website of a major big box home improvement retailer. There are nearly 30,000 of these planters sold annually for as much as $84.95 each. Since the consumer trends toward larger planters (the biggest planter at an affordable price), this item sells extremely well.

Problem:

  • The planter cubes poorly—only 600 pieces per shipping container and fewer when palletized and moved by truck domestically
  • Result: Retail price is high, reducing unit sales in favor of cheaper, less attractive whiskey barrel tubs
  • As indicated to the left, the overall customer reviews of this item are poor—consumers love the appearance of the planter but there is a systemic problem due to structural deficiencies.

The EDIA Solution

  • Re-engineered the product, strengthening corners and replacing staples with wood screws
  • Improved cube with EDIA flat-pack, significantly reducing supply chain costs
  • This produces a superior product which can retail nearly 50% below than the conventional planter while improving retailer’s ROI
  • As you can see, the appearance of the EDIA product is indistinguishable from that of the conventional planter

Another win-win: better product, lower retail (translating into higher unit sales) and improved ROI for the retailer

Loved it until the corners busted open at the bottom.... :(

wood swells making stapled corners burst

Review:
Disappointed in quality especially considering the $70 price. The first time the bottom got wet from watering plants, the wood swelled causing the stapled corners to separate. My planters are filled with dirt and plants and are now difficult to attempt repair. I bought five planter that are less than a month old.
